The problem with screens
Ever notice how people texting at night have that eerie blue glow?
Or wake up ready to write down the next great idea, and get blinded by your phone’s screen?
During the day, computer screens look good—they’re designed to look like the sun. But, at 9PM, 10PM, or 3AM, you probably shouldn’t be looking at the sun.
In the modern age of technology it is not uncommon to come home after a long day at work or school and blow off steam by reading an e-book or watching television. Lately, however, scientists have been cautioning against using light-emitting devices before bed. Why? The light from our devices is “short-wavelength-enriched,” meaning it has a higher concentration of blue light than natural light—and blue light affects levels of the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin more than any other wavelength.
The solution to the problem of blue light is simple: block out the blue light! We don’t have to completely block blue light, but if we reduce it, it effects are significantly weakened. If we just control our blue light amount, we can protect our eyes and sleep.
How to block blue light on our phones
We use our phones a lot at night times, making our phones an important device to protect.
For Android, you’ll want to use an app to filter blue light. A few manufacturers build and include their own screen filter setting on the phone/tablet, so have a look in Settings first.
Here are three really great apps for screen filtering:
|Twilight||Free, Paid Option|
|Blue Light Filter – Night Mode||Free|
|Fl.ux||Free, Root Only|
|Night Shift||Stock Feature – only works on some devices|
|Fl.ux||Requires Jailbreak – Available free from Cydia|
Windows, Mac, Linux
For Windows, Mac and Linux, there is a great program named Flux (https://justgetflux.com/), which is a very popular option and works very well. Flux is probably the only notable blue light filter for all PC platforms.
Felix Gray Lenses
Felix Gray Lenses are glasses which filter blue light from your eyes so there is no need for a blue light filter. They work great and may be a more practical solution for you. Check them out!
